Fast, honest fridge repair

Fridge Repair in Visalia, Done Before Your Food Spoils

A refrigerator rarely dies all at once. It gives you a few days of warning: milk that sours early, a freezer that frosts over, a fan that starts to rattle at night.

In a Visalia summer, that warning window gets short. Your fridge should hold 40°F or below and the freezer 0°F, and once the fresh-food side climbs past that, the clock on your groceries starts.

We treat a warm fridge as a priority call. You describe the symptom, we tell you honestly whether it sounds like a $150 fix or a repair-or-replace decision, and we come out ready to finish the job on the first visit.

What Our Refrigerator Repair Covers

  • Diagnosis of cooling, defrost, water and electrical faults on every major brand
  • Evaporator and condenser fan motors, start relays and overloads
  • Defrost heaters, defrost thermostats, thermistors and adaptive defrost boards
  • Air dampers and temperature sensors that cause a warm fridge or a too-cold one
  • Main control boards and inverter boards
  • Ice makers, water inlet valves, dispenser switches and frozen fill tubes
  • Door gaskets, hinges and door alignment
  • Clogged defrost drains and water leaks inside the cabinet or onto the floor
  • Condenser coil cleaning when dust is the real cause
  • Sealed-system work (compressor, refrigerant leaks, recharge) by EPA Section 608 certified technicians
Local know-how

Why Refrigerators Fail Differently in Visalia

The San Joaquin Valley is hard on refrigeration. These four local conditions explain most of the calls we take.

Triple-digit heat

Visalia logged 49 days at or above 100°F in 2024, and July highs average in the upper 90s. Every one of those days pushes the compressor and condenser fan harder. A fridge with a weak fan motor or dusty coils often limps through spring and quits in the first heat wave.

Garage refrigerators

Plenty of Visalia homes keep a second fridge or freezer in the garage. GE rates its garage-ready models for 38°F to 110°F ambient. A standard kitchen fridge in a hot garage runs nonstop in August and can stop holding temperature entirely, so before we replace parts on a garage unit, we check its rating.

Valley dust

Dust and pet hair coat condenser coils faster here than on the coast. Clogged coils trap heat, so the fridge runs longer, warms up, and wears out its compressor early.

Heat-wave power flickers

Southern California Edison serves Visalia, and summer outages and brownouts happen. We see control and inverter boards fail right after a flicker. If your fridge has power to the lights but won’t cool after an outage, call us before you shop for a new one.

Water note: Cal Water’s 2024 report puts Visalia’s average hardness at 73 ppm, which is soft. City water rarely kills an ice maker. Homes on private wells outside city limits are a different story; scale and sediment there can choke the water inlet valve screen.

Symptoms & fixes

Common Refrigerator Problems We Fix in Visalia Homes

Each problem below lists what we usually find, what you can safely check before you call, and what the repair involves. If your check doesn’t solve it, call (559) 597-1018 and tell us which one matches.

Refrigerator Not Cooling, but the Freezer Still Works

This is the call we get most. The freezer makes all the cold air, and a fan pushes it through a damper into the fresh-food side. When the fridge warms up and the freezer stays cold, the air has stopped moving.

What we usually find
A failed evaporator fan motor, a frozen-over evaporator coil from a defrost fault (heater, defrost thermostat or defrost board), or an air damper stuck shut.
Check this first
Open the freezer and listen. On most models you can press the door switch and hear the fan run. Silence, or a scraping sound, points to the fan. A thick layer of frost on the freezer’s back panel points to the defrost system.
The repair
We replace the fan or the failed defrost part and melt the ice off the coil. Most of these jobs finish in one visit.

Fridge and Freezer Both Warm

When both sections lose cold, the problem sits in the parts that remove heat: the compressor, the condenser fan, the coils, or the electronics that run them.

What we usually find
Dust-packed condenser coils, a dead condenser fan, a failed start relay or overload, a bad inverter board on newer models, and less often a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak.
Check this first
Make sure the display doesn’t show “OF OF” or “O FF.” On Samsung models that means Cooling Off (demo) mode, which shuts down cooling while the lights stay on; your manual lists the buttons to exit it. Then feel the air near the bottom grille. No warm airflow at all means the condenser fan has likely quit.
The repair
Fans, relays and boards are usually same-visit fixes. A compressor or leak is sealed-system work, and we price it in writing so you can weigh repair against replacement.

Refrigerator Too Cold or Freezing Food

Lettuce frozen solid in the crisper usually means too much cold air reaches the fresh-food side.

What we usually find
An air damper stuck open, a failed thermistor (temperature sensor) feeding the board a wrong reading, or a control setting someone bumped.
Check this first
Confirm the setting reads 37°F to 40°F, and keep food away from the vent where cold air enters.
The repair
We test the sensor’s resistance against the spec for your model and replace the damper or thermistor.

Refrigerator Leaking Water

Where the water shows up tells us most of the story.

Puddle inside, under the crisper drawers
A clogged defrost drain. Meltwater can’t reach the drain pan, so it freezes in the drain and overflows into the cabinet. Bottom-freezer and French-door models do this often.
Puddle on the floor at the front
A cracked or overflowing drain pan, or a leaking water filter housing.
Puddle at the back
A loose or split supply line, or a failing water inlet valve.
Check this first
Shut the water supply valve to the fridge if the leak is active, and check that the water filter sits fully locked in place.
The repair
We clear the drain, fix its heater or strap if the model has one, and replace leaking valves or lines.

Ice Maker Not Working or Water Dispenser Not Flowing

What we usually find
An old water filter, a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, or a dead ice maker module. Some Samsung French-door models build frost inside the door-mounted ice compartment and jam the ice bucket.
Check this first
Change the filter if it’s past its date, confirm the ice maker’s arm or switch sits in the ON position, and confirm the freezer holds near 0°F. An ice maker won’t cycle in a warm freezer.
The repair
We thaw and fix the fill tube, replace the valve or the ice maker, and test a full harvest cycle before we leave.

Frost Buildup in the Freezer

What we usually find
A door gasket that no longer seals, a door that doesn’t close on its own, or a defrost component that has failed.
Check this first
Close the door on a dollar bill at several points. If it slides out easily, the gasket has lost its seal. Also check that a bag or bin isn’t holding the door open.
The repair
A new gasket or hinge adjustment, or a defrost part replacement. Don’t chip ice off the coil with a knife or screwdriver. One slip punctures the evaporator, and that turns a $200 repair into sealed-system work.

Loud Buzzing, Clicking or Rattling

Rattle or scrape from the freezer
The evaporator fan blade hitting ice, usually a defrost problem.
Rattle or squeal from the bottom back
A worn condenser fan motor or debris in the blade.
A click every few minutes and no cooling
The compressor tries to start and the start relay or overload cuts it off.
Check this first
Pull the bottom grille, look for anything touching the condenser fan, and note when the noise happens.
The repair
Fan motors and start relays are inexpensive and usually on the truck.

Refrigerator Not Running at All

What we usually find
A tripped breaker or failed outlet, a dead control board, or a board damaged by a power surge.
Check this first
Plug a lamp into the same outlet and check the breaker panel. If the display is dark and the outlet works, the problem sits inside the fridge.
The repair
We test the board’s power supply and outputs before we recommend replacing it, because control boards are among the most expensive parts on a fridge.

Condensation, Sweating or a Door That Won’t Close

What we usually find
Torn gaskets, sagging doors, a fridge that isn’t leveled so the doors swing open, or a failed mullion heater on French-door models.
The repair
Gasket replacement, hinge and leveling adjustment, or a heater replacement.
Food safety

Fridge Stopped Cooling? What to Do Before We Arrive

FDA guidance gives you about 4 hours of safe storage in a fridge that has stopped cooling, as long as you keep the door shut. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24.

  1. Keep the doors closed. Every opening dumps cold air.
  2. Put a thermometer inside. A cheap appliance thermometer tells you the real temperature, which the display may not.
  3. Move the risky food first. Milk, meat, fish, leftovers and cut fruit go into a cooler with ice if the fridge reads above 40°F.
  4. Know when to toss it. Throw out perishable food that sat above 40°F for 2 hours or more, or 1 hour when the room tops 90°F, which covers a lot of Visalia summer afternoons.
  5. Thick frost on the freezer’s back wall? Move the food to coolers, unplug the fridge, and leave the doors open with towels on the floor. A full melt takes several hours and often restores cooling for a few days. It’s a stopgap, not a fix: the defrost fault will come back.
  6. Never chip at ice with a sharp tool. A punctured evaporator coil means sealed-system work.
  7. Smell burning or see scorch marks? Unplug the fridge or switch off its breaker and call us.

  • Amana
  • Haier

A few brand notes from the bench:

  • Samsung and LG: many newer models run variable-speed inverter compressors. A dead inverter board can look exactly like a dead compressor, so we test the board before anyone condemns the compressor.
  • Kenmore: Sears sold Kenmore refrigerators built by other manufacturers. The first three digits of the model number tell us who made yours (106 is Whirlpool, 795 is LG, 253 is Frigidaire), and that tells us which parts fit.
  • GE garage-ready top-freezers: GE builds these with R600a refrigerant and rates them for 38°F to 110°F, which suits a Visalia garage.
  • Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and Amana: these share many parts across the family, so the truck often already carries what your fridge needs.

How it works

How Our Refrigerator Repair Works

1

Call or book online

Tell us the brand, the style and what the fridge is doing. Have the model and serial tag handy; on most fridges it sits on a side wall or ceiling inside the fresh-food section. It lets us check parts before we drive over.

2

We confirm your arrival

We call to confirm your appointment time. If we’re running late, we call you, not the other way round.

3

We diagnose and quote

We read the temperatures, test the fans, relays, sensors and defrost parts with a meter, and show you what failed. You get a written price. Nothing happens until you say yes.

4

We fix it and confirm it’s cooling

We replace the part, check the compressor, fans and defrost circuit, and leave our 90-day warranty in writing. A fridge takes several hours to reach 40°F, so we tell you what reading to expect by evening.

What Changes the Price

  • The failed part. A start relay costs a fraction of an inverter board.
  • The brand and style. French-door and built-in models take longer to open up, and some brands price their boards higher.
  • Access. A fridge boxed into cabinetry, or a top-mounted condenser, adds labor.
  • Ice on the coil. A frozen evaporator has to melt before we can test the defrost parts, which adds time.
  • Parts availability. Common parts ride on the truck; special-order parts add a second visit, and we give you the arrival date in writing.

Every fridge is different. Call us, tell us the brand and what it’s doing, and we’ll give you the exact cost. Our diagnostic visit is $49, and you get the full price in writing before we start.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Refrigerator?

Repair it if the fix costs less than about half the price of a comparable new fridge and the unit still has years left. Fixr puts the average refrigerator lifespan around 13 years. Fans, relays, sensors, gaskets and defrost parts almost always make sense to repair, even on an older fridge.

The hard call is a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak on a fridge past 10 years. We give you the number, the age math and our honest opinion, and you decide.

California law helps here. Under the Right to Repair Act, manufacturers must keep repair parts and documentation available for at least 7 years after a model’s last manufacture date for products that wholesale for $100 or more, which covers nearly every refrigerator. A fridge built in the last several years rarely becomes unrepairable for lack of parts.

FAQ

Refrigerator Repair FAQs

We’re open 24/7 and can usually reach you the same day. A fridge that has stopped cooling goes to the front of the line. Most repairs finish on that first visit; if we need to order a part, you get its arrival date in writing.

Yes. The diagnostic visit is $49, and you get a written quote before any repair starts. You never pay for a repair you didn’t approve.

The freezer makes the cold air and a fan sends it to the fridge side. When the fridge warms and the freezer doesn’t, the usual causes are a failed evaporator fan, a frosted-over coil from a defrost fault, or a stuck air damper. All three are repairable, usually in one visit.

Usually yes for fans, sensors, relays, gaskets and defrost parts. For a failed compressor or refrigerant leak, compare the quote with half the price of a similar new fridge. We’ll give you the numbers and an honest opinion.

Yes. We also check whether the model is rated for garage use. A fridge that isn’t rated for a hot garage can fail again after the repair, and we’d rather tell you that up front.

Yes. We’re registered with the California BHGS, fully insured, and our technicians hold EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant work. Federal rules require that certification before anyone opens a refrigerant circuit.

Yes. Samsung and LG make up a large share of the fridges in newer Visalia homes. We repair their ice makers, fans, sensors, defrost systems, inverter boards and compressors.
